My rather lovely Nancy

My background

My name is Michael Walter and I have been a photographer for over 25 years.

In that time I have worked as an editorial, commercial and advertising photographer. I started out as a photojournalist covering the 1992 civil war in Yugoslavia. Later I was commissioned to cover the 2003 Iraq War for the Guardian. I returned to the middle east to cover the Bam earthquake in Iran and documented the first World Food Programme convoy to pass though Libya and the Sahara into Chad delivering aid to Sudanese refugees in Darfur.

In 2007 I worked for Eurostar to shoot an advertising campaign to mark the opening of St Pancras International.

I trained in Fine Art, first at (the then) Bristol Poly and then followed by a post grad at the Slade School of Art. I would like to think this informs my approach to photography.

I have always loved dogs and have found having my own has given me the added bonus of introducing me to many interesting people and of course their beautiful dogs.

When I got my first dog I was a bit concerned about the work and responsibility it would entail and had absolutely no idea of how much I would come to love each of them. For me seeing my lovely whippety girl Nancy belting across a field towards me just makes my heart leap with joy. While of course being acutely aware that were I a rabbit the view would not be quite so uplifting.

Going on a run with her can banish any passing unhappy thoughts and her need to sleep against you while watching evening TV seems to bring the day to a contented end.

Both Nancy and our late Jack Russell, Jap, have inspired me to take many pictures.
